Interview Tips That Will Get You Hired

In the competitive world of job hunting, being prepared and smashing your interview is the crucial step in securing your dream job. The interview process is not simply about showcasing your skills and experience, but also an opportunity to make a lasting impression and demonstrate how you’d fit in within the company and it’s culture.

In this article, I offer a shortened version of what I discuss in my corresponding podcast episode: “Interview Tips That Will Get You Hired.” For a more in-depth version, please go give that episode a listen!

To help you navigate the interview process, here are some tips on preparation, execution, and getting that job offer!

1) Thoroughly Research the Company:

  • Before stepping into the interview room, take the time to research the company. Understand its history, values, and achievements.

  • This knowledge will not only display your genuine interest in the company and the position, but also help you tailor your responses to align with the company’s goals.

2) Know the Job Description Inside Out:

  • Familiarize yourself with the job requirements and responsibilities. Be prepared to discuss how your skills, experiences, and interests directly correlate and align with the position.

  • Doing this will demonstrate not only that you’ve done the research and that you’re prepared, but also that you fully understand the position and know that you’re able to meet its demands.

3) Prepare Insight Questions:

  • Impress your interview by preparing thoughtful questions about the company, team, or role. This displays your interest and also helps you determine if this company and jo aligns with your career goals. (Remember that an interview is usually just as much you interviewing them as it is them interviewing you).

4) Have a “Weakness” Prepared:

  • Always have an answer prepared for the “what’s a weakness of yours?” question. For example, I always say I pay too much attention to the details, and I can lose track of the big picture.” Follow this up with how you are working to get better at this.

5) Your Resume:

  • Always, always bring a physical copy of your resume with you.

  • Know your resume inside and out; be able to talk in detail about anything listed on your resume.

6) Let Your Personality Shine:

  • Half of the game is typically going to come down to your personality. You can have the best grades in your class or the most attractive experience, but if you’re hard to talk to or unpleasant to chat with, getting the job is going to be more challenging. At the end of the day, people want you to be able to perform the job well, but they want to enjoy working with you as well.

  • Be authentically yourself during the interview. Authenticity builds a genuine connection with the interview, and allows you to maintain consistency throughout the hiring process.

7) Follow up Email:

  • After your interview, send a thank-you email expressing gratitude for the opportunity. Reiterate your interest in the position and that you hope to speak with them again soon. Additionally, feel free to briefly touch on key points discussed in the interview if this is relevant for you.

Following these tips, you’ll not only impress your interviewer but also greatly increase your chances of landing your dream job. Remember, an interview is a two-way street, and you can use it as an opportunity to showcase your skills, your awesome personality, and ultimately if the company is the right fit for your career aspirations.

Reminder: don’t be afraid to hype yourself up and fully sell yourself. You got this! Good luck to you all and I hope you all get offered the job of your dreams :)
